My friends and neighbors here in Fort Bend County are ready for change and my message is getting through. I can’t wait until they start seeing our ad.

My opponent supported the construction of a privately run toll road through the heart of Fort Bend County before he opposed it. He has also aided and abetted the construction of an enormous, unsightly and unhealthy trash dump here in the county. Its time that government in this county served the needs of the families, small business owners, churches and schools instead of the biggest campaign contributors.

Dear Friend,

I wanted to give you a quick update on my race for County Commissioner here in Fort Bend County. These are incredibly exciting times to be a Democrat in Texas, especially here in Fort Bend County. Right here in Tom DeLay’s old stomping grounds we’ve seen an unbelievable explosion in Democratic turnout. In the early voting period, more than twice as many ballots have been cast in the Democratic primary than in the Republican primary.

This is great news and shows just how far this county and this country have come since I launched my challenge against Tom DeLay in 2003. At the time DeLay was described as “the most powerful man in Washington” and mockingly told waiters in restaurants “I AM the federal government.” When we started that campaign it was written off as a fool’s errand. Now we know it was one of the early pebbles that have triggered an avalanche of political changes. (more…)

FortBend Now

Richard Morrison, candidate for Commissioners Court Precinct 1 and attorney representing the Coalition Against Blue Ridge Landfill Expansion, says if elected he will suggest that Fort Bend County break the contract barring a lawsuit against Allied Waste.

“If elected, I am going to urge the county to break the contract and come out against the expansion,” said Morrison.

He says there is no conflict of interest involved in his run for Commissioners Court and his role as attorney representing CABRLE. The hearing to determine if the landfill will be allowed to expand, scheduled for June 16-25 in Austin, will have long been over before he would be sworn in as commissioner.

Representatives of local television news stations are expected to contend that an expansion of the landfill will interrupt Doppler radar signals, which would put Texas residents at risk. Morrison says he will contend that an expansion would exacerbate already environmentally harmful conditions at the landfill.

He is not “confident” of a ruling in CABRLE’s favor, but says he is hopeful.

“These proceedings are stacked in favor of the landfill,” said Morrison. “Confident is an overstatement.”

Quite a racket emanated from the school itself Wednesday, but the din didn’t come from boisterous children.

Residents and business leaders appeared at a public meeting at the school to unite against the Grand Parkway project (on Texas 99, called Segment C), a potential toll road between U.S. 59 and Texas 288. The event attracted around 400 people, including elected officials and representatives from the Texas Department of Transportation and the Grand Parkway Association. (more…)

Greatwood attorney Richard Morrison has announced he has filed to run in the Democratic primary for Fort Bend County Precinct 1 commissioner.

“Residents of Precinct 1 have lost confidence in Tom Stavinoha,” Morrison said in a candidate’s statement. “His choice to approve a toll way as an extension of the Grand Parkway, his support of I-69 through the middle of Fort Bend County, his conscious decision to ignore flooding and drainage problems in the precinct, and his approval of the location of a 20-story pile of Houston’s garbage in Precinct 1 demonstrates how little he cares about the current families of Precinct 1.

“Residents of Precinct 1 are tired of leaders who will not stand up to the big moneyed interests and who engage in ‘pay to play politics,’ which leaves current residents without effective representation,” Morrison said. “Stavinoha has lost his focus on the families that live in Precinct 1 and their critical issues of quality of life and an honest ethical government. That is why I filed to run for Fort Bend County Commissioner of Precinct 1.”

Morrison said families in Precinct 1 “are demanding a leader; someone with a backbone, willing to fight outside interests that want to pillage our county resources to the detriment of our current residents. I am a seventh-generation Texan, whose parents and grandparents taught me to stand up for what you believe in, work hard and play by the rules. (more…)
